Dr. Gayatri Palat played a key role in bringing change in opioid regulations in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, working with the Government and other stakeholders. She hopes that with these changes, she will also be able to change the way physicians and nurses in India think when they are deciding how and when to begin or refer for palliative care.

Key Accomplishments
- Instrumental in developing the Department of Palliative Care at MNJ Institute of Oncology, Hyderabad, one of the regional centers in India for palliative care by developing staff and faculty positions and recognized training programs and quality clinical services like out-patient, in-patient and home-based care.
- Key role in developing Pain Relief and Palliative Care Society, Hyderabad, a non-profit organization which is currently playing a key role in advocacy and training in palliative care in the state.
- Key role in developing a dedicated pediatric palliative care program at MNJ Institute of Oncology and fellowship in pediatric palliative care in India.
- As national Faculty for Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC), participated in developing the curriculum for the IAPC course in palliative care.
- Played an important role in facilitating the development of palliative care in the National Cancer Control Program of countries like Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines working with IAEA.
- Participated in development of EPEC-India curriculum.
- Participated in Opioid availability activities at National Level working as a member of Indian Association of Palliative Care in collaboration with Madison University, WHOCC, Pain and Policy Study Group, Wisconsin and Pain and Palliative Care Society, Calicut, a WHO Demonstration Project.
- Facilitated development of the Department of Palliative Medicine and development of the training course, Diploma in Palliative Medicine, a first of its kind in the country at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi and was one of the faculty for the program.
